About the Authors and Artist

Edward C. (Ted) Beedy, Ph.D., is a wildlife biologist and ornithologist with more than 25 years of experience studying California wildlife species and their habitats. He studied birds of the Yosemite region for his doctoral dissertation in zoology at U.C. Davis. He authored articles on Sierra birds, coauthored the bird chapter of "California Wildlife and their Habitats: Western Sierra Nevada" for the U.S. Forest Service, and was a coauthor for the California Department of Fish and Game's Wildlife Habitat Relationships project. He coauthored Discovering Sierra Birds, which is being revised extensively for the current Field Guide to Birds of the Sierra Nevada. Ted currently lives in Nevada City, California.

David Lukas is a naturalist and writer with a long interest in birds. He has worked on numerous ornithological research projects throughout the western United States and now teaches and writes extensively about birds. His articles have appeared in Audubon, Birding, California Wild, Orion, Sunset, Wild Bird, and other magazines, and he is the author of two books: Watchable Birds of the Great Basin and Wild Birds of California, plus a local bird guide to western Nevada County. He recently revised the classic guidebook Sierra Nevada Natural History for the University of California Press, which guide will be published in 2003. David has also taught many bird and natural history classes for the Mono Lake Committee, Sierra Club, Sierra Nevada Field Campus, Squaw Valley Community of Writers, and Yosemite Association. David currently lives in Nevada City with his partner Maya.

Stephen L. Granholm, Ph.D., has been conducting studies of California wildlife and their habitats since 1976. For his doctoral dissertation, he compared the bird communities of burned and unburned forests in Yosemite National Park. He was a major contributor to two publications on California bird-habitat relationships, and he co-authored Discovering Sierra Birds. He currently lives in Albany, California.

Keith Hansen is a wildlife illustrator who specializes in the accurate and creative portrayal of birds. He has illustrated for numerous organizations including The Point Reyes Bird Observatory, The Nature Conservancy, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and many others. Keith has enjoyed doing art for many bird books and field guides as well as dozens of bird related T-shirts, brochures, note cards, posters, and many private commissions. Besides birding the Sierra for many years, he also has explored much of North America. Keith also loves to bird in and lead tours to Mexico, Central America, Ecuador, Ireland, Scotland, and the tropical Pacific. Keith has a gallery in Bolinas, California, where many of his works can be seen.
